November 2006 Continued
Here is a couple more NJT F40PH's.
Look at this beauty! Retired by Conrail sometime between 1997 and 1999, #7725 was conveyed to CSX in 1999 but never left Altoona. The Conrail Historical Society was looking to preserve this classic Conrail road-switcher, but CSX says they have plans for it.
This NW SD40 is also stored here. It could possibly be rebuilt into an RPU6 slug.
Another SD50.
December 2006
Future GP38-3 ex-7027 sits outside the E&M shop. She's in the process of being built up from a frame. The green and black piece of equipment on the rear of the unit is the APU.
Juniata installs new cabs on all current rebuilds; these are not technically chop-noses.
Here's the NS 2830 stripped to a frame. The next step is to start reinstalling everything back onto the frame.
All of these GP38s are stored [hopefully] pending conversion to GP38-2.
For the second time in three years, I catch Q#1/1000 with a prime-mover in it. This time it's a different type.
Here's a closer look at NS 1000 with a prime-mover in it with the sun almost set.
This is where many of the GP38s are being stored before they enter the shop for rebuild. Notice the SD38 on the left and the RJ Corman GP38 next to it. The RJ Corman unit is here for rebuild too.
Nothing special here, just the front of the E&M shop.
NS testbed 1000
These GP40s are here for a new rebuild program.
More ex-NJT F40PH shots.
January 2007
NS 7046 is stranded among rival GE's in this view. NS 7046 became NS 5832.
A GP50 sits next to one of the F unit B's. The GP50 became NS 5833.
This frame belongs to a GP50. Notice now badly the frame is bent on both ends.
The famous main sign of the Juniata Shop. This sign has changed little since being erected. The stack of the power plant is in the background.
NS 1000 is nearby.
February 2007
One of the GP60's having wreck repairs is here. Notice the new cab door and repaired sheet metal on the long hood.
NS 1000 is between an SD40-2 and a GP38AC frame, stripped for rebuild.
MT-6 973's conversion to RPU6 is in progress. They have plated over the numberboard locations.
March 2007
NS SD45-2 1700 minus fuel tank.
The only thing I hate about shooting engines at the turntable, is most of them have their rear facing the camera.
NS GP38-3 5830
Interesting mix of power.
New RPU6 slug 871 converted from an SD40 is sitting near the paintshop in primer waiting for black paint. This slug came from Roanoke.
Four scale test cars are in view near the tank/steel shop. One of them is a 2-axle car.
Five long hoods sit at the west end of the shop. Two of them belong to NS 870-871.
Variety of power at the turntable.
This frame belongs to NS 2869. 2869 had the honor of working with the first GP50 rebuild, NS 5801, just after it was released.
Crews are torching off everything on the top of NS 1589.
NS 1589 will become an RPU6 in the 870 series.
Again a shot of the GP38's stored behind the freight shop.
April 2007
It appears that CR 7725 is leaving for a CSX shop near you. She's been stored in the deadline for around ten years.
NS 1376 is being reduced to a frame for rebuild. This would become NS 3071, the first GP40/GP40-2 rebuild.
Overall shot.
Here's an SD40 frame stripped to become an RPU6.
Juniata Shop looking south.
Juniata Shop looking west.
Closer up on the E&M shop and turntable.
Closer on some of the original 1880's shop buildings. The brown building is the test shed, and the paint shop is on the left.
Another view of the original section of the Juniata Shop. Again, the brown testshed and blue paintshop are modern additions.
Juniata from the south. All of the main buildings are in view in this photo.
Look very carefully at this circle and you can see the outlines of the roundhouse that once stood here. The roundhouse was the erecting shop of the Altoona Car Shops which included what it today Lumax, Home Nursing Agency, and Union Tank Car Co.
NS 1374 is currently undergoing rebuild from GP40 to GP40-2 for yard service with 4-axle slugs.
A pair of GP40 frames are next to an SD60M.
This EMDX SD45 is a diamond in the rough.
