July 2009
Keith Burkey spots NS 999, a BP-4 class fully battery powered switcher. The frame belongs to NS 2911, and notice only a small portion of the long hood was used. The cab is new as well. This unit has no generator to charge the batteries except regenerative braking from Brookville Manufacturing. It is designed to be plugged in when not in use.

A pair of long hood forward SD40-2s are getting switched to short hood forward. Notice the new noses nearby, not sure if those are for these two.
NS 5531 has been set aside.
NS 5412 and 5400 were side swiped recently.
Construction is well underway on the new smoke stack for the Juniata Shops power plant.
Bruce was super lucky. He caught three road slugs, all in slightly different stages of construction.

September 2009
The new stack is now full height.
NS slug 707 is nearly finished in this photo.
One of several MBTA units here for overhaul.
UPY 2004 was stripped down for conversion to a genset, but so far nothing more has happened.
When Railpower went bankrupt, these two wound up property of NS to settle a debt. We think the UPY unit was included, but we're not sure what NS will do with these yet. NITX RP20BD 1706 has been finished since April 2009. The other was to become NITX 1707, but was never repainted.
The lumber storage track have a variety of power on them today.
October 2009
NS 1636 is getting a nose job. Next they will cut the cab away, and replace it with a new cab and nose from the photo below.

December 2009
Two future SD40-Es, one gutted, the other not yet started.
The wrecked NS 4622 from the Graniteville incident. It appeared it would be scrapped, but it was later moved to the deadline.
Work continues on getting the new smoke stack and scrubbers online.
A little sun reflects on the letters of the Juniata Shops sign.
January 2010
A shop worker waves as an SD40-2 with a new cab is shuffled around.
Another SD40-2 with new cab.
UPY 2004 has been brought out of storage. It appears they're going to finally convert it to a genset. For who, I don't yet know.
May 2010
Here we see two of three TRWX units here for a major overhaul among various NS units.
NS 6113 is one of several long-hood-forward SD40-2s getting a new cab and changed to short-hood-forward.
An SD70M and SD60I. The SD70M is one of ten built here in Altoona at the Juniata Shops.
NS 1633 has just been repainted after an overhaul. One of the TRWX units is nearby.
A 6000 series SD40-2 with new cab.
June 2010
A new road slug has been kitbashed together and is taking a spin on the turntable. This is NS 718, an RP-E4C road slug, converted from NS GP38 2940. Note the new cab; not all of these got new cabs.

July 2010
Here we have an SD40E in progress, a blue SD40-2, and a former Conrail SW1500 that's been sold to PRLX.
Broadside view of one of the TRWX units. These are formerly GO Transit.
The MBTA unit.
Six EMD-style cabs for 1600 and 6000 series SD40-2s.
NS 1644 will have a new cab and nose soon. Note the eight noses in the foreground with the pickup truck parked nearby for size comparison.
Across from Thompsons Pharmacy we see a group of stored engines. The NITX gensets were moved here earlier this year.
Another MBTA unit.
NS is gathering passenger equipment for either OCS use or the new steam program. This car was shipped to Altoona on a flatcar and was set back onto its trucks at the Juniata Shops.
Overview of the turntable area.
Two GP38s for different slug projects. 2912 will probably become an RP-E4C road slug, and 2885 will be a slug paired up with an ECO repower unit.
10 days later, here's 2912 again.
5410 is waiting for a shop space to be converted to an SD40E.
Here's the hood for one of the ECO slugs, from 2888.
August 2010
Here's the 2885, a future slug for one of the ECO units.
Here the RailKing has an unmarked frame, probably from 2912 a GP38 which will be rebuilt into a road slug.
NS 2214 may be getting overhauled for PRLX (not sure). Behind it sits the PRLX 2204, which is ex-NS same number.
NS 5414 has been moved to 27 track. Shop employees have already started removing parts from it.
Just over a week later, all the guts, including the electrical cabinet, have been removed from the 5414.
Hiding between buildings is RPRX 2010, a Railpower RP20BD. The Juniata Shops just finished it and will send it to RJ Corman PA Lines for testing.
NS 2888 will be one of the slugs for the two ECO masters.
The new scrubbers and smoke stack were cut in recently.
