May 2005 Continued
MRL SD45 359 is the oldest thing at the shop today.
December 2005
Previously stored at Enola, the Spirit of Conrail, and many other GP38's could have new lives as GP38-2's.
January 2006
Surprise! NS 3821, the only SD40-2 to be converted to a 38-2, and the first RPU6 are at the shop for servicing.
An interesting view with a GATX leaser.
August 2006
During the summer of 2006, Juniata tested and painted a group of 10 SD70ACe's under contract for Electro-Motive. Three can be seen here in the shop yard and they are ready to be picked up.
October 2006
Your usual view at the turntable.
JBS has finally started more GP50 rebuilds. Here 7029 I believe is torn apart, but still retains its trucks.
November 2006
GP50/GP38-3 frame.
Three of the four F units purchased for OCS service at the E&M shop.
RJC rebuilds 3801 and 3802 have been completed and are ready for pickup. They are GP38-2 rebuilds from GP38's. They're going to Central Kentucky Lines.
NS Q#1, the SD45 prime-mover testbed has been repainted and renumbered NS 1000.
From Sheetz, here's F9PH 1020 again.
MT-6 973 is seen along the road being prepared for rebuild. Its trucks have already been taken.
Today we go down to where many dead locomotives are stored. Here's an SD50 and a highnose B23-7.
Also stored at the shop is a group of former NJ Transit F40's. A highnose GP38 is with an F40PH here.
This area in the foreground is used for storage of trucks and truck components. The ex-NJT F40PH's are here just for storage.
Even though this GP38 is in the deadline, it could still be rebuilt as a GP38-2 in the 5600 series at some point.
Here is a couple more NJT F40PH's.
Look at this beauty! Retired by Conrail sometime between 1997 and 1999, #7725 was conveyed to CSX in 1999 but never left Altoona. The Conrail Historical Society was looking to preserve this classic Conrail road-switcher, but CSX says they have plans for it.
This NW SD40 is also stored here. It could possibly be rebuilt into an RPU6 slug.
Another SD50.
This hand-stiched panoramic shot of the west end of the Tank and Steel shops shows a wide open space in the foreground. This is the former side of the Altoona Car Shops erecting shop, which was a roundhouse. See my aerial photos on later pages.
December 2006
Future GP38-3 ex-7027 sits outside the E&M shop. She's in the process of being built up from a frame. The green and black piece of equipment on the rear of the unit is the APU.
Juniata installs new cabs on all current rebuilds; these are not technically chop-noses.
NS GP49 4615.
Here's the NS 2830 stripped to a frame. The next step is to start reinstalling everything back onto the frame.
NS GP38-2 rebuild 5640.
All of these GP38s are stored [hopefully] pending conversion to GP38-2.
For the second time in three years, I catch Q#1/1000 with a prime-mover in it. This time it's a different type.
Here's a closer look at NS 1000 with a prime-mover in it with the sun almost set.
This is where many of the GP38s are being stored before they enter the shop for rebuild. Notice the SD38 on the left and the RJ Corman GP38 next to it. The RJ Corman unit is here for rebuild too.
Nothing special here, just the front of the E&M shop.
NS testbed 1000
These GP40s are here for a new rebuild program.
More ex-NJT F40PH shots.
And one more.
January 2007
NS 7046 is stranded among rival GE's in this view. NS 7046 became NS 5832.
A GP50 sits next to one of the F unit B's. The GP50 became NS 5833.
This frame belongs to a GP50. Notice now badly the frame is bent on both ends.
The famous main sign of the Juniata Shop. This sign has changed little since being erected. The stack of the power plant is in the background.
Lots of long hoods sitting around and an SD70M-2.
NS 1000 is nearby.
There were three Dash-8's at the circle today, here are two of them. 8418's middle hood is off.
Here we have a GP38AC next to the treatment plant.
This big siren is on top of the E&M shop on the edge toward the circle. I've never heard it go off, and don't know why it's here. I do know that it's not the shop whistle and was here prior to WWII.
Another C40-8W.
February 2007
One of the GP60's having wreck repairs is here. Notice the new cab door and repaired sheet metal on the long hood.
NS 1000 is between an SD40-2 and a GP38AC frame, stripped for rebuild.
MT-6 973's conversion to RPU6 is in progress. They have plated over the numberboard locations.
NS slug 923 is next to the treatment plant.
