Winter 2001-02
In this angle from Sheetz we see an SW1500 that looks like it's going to be dipped in black before leaving the shop.
NS 2220 has been shop switcher for quite a while. 2220 is posing on the original turntable.
This is Q#1. This is a prime-mover test bed. Engines are placed on this body and tested. This is an Ex-Erie SD45 and one of two painted for the bicenntenial.
It looks like the Union Railroad with all the end cab switchers out there. These are all SW1500's.
Summer 2002
Here is a GP38-2 on a flat car minus trucks and fuel tank. As of September 2004 this unit was in the deadline on shop trucks, but as of the end of 2007 was stripped down to a frame and cab.
March 2003
2109's hood is missing and its prime-mover is exposed.
SOU-painted 4610 shows up at Juniata for some heavy repairs. This unit was never owned by the Southern.
July 2003
NPBL 1451 is seen at the Juniata Shop.
August 2003
One of the Long Island Railroad's locomotives, a DE30AC, is parked at Juniata. The shop was awarded a contract to overhaul these engines including repairs the the engine mount.
December 2003
In a scene that could easily pass for 1985, two Conrail units are at the turntable area. 9348 is an SW1001 and 7725 is a GP38. These two are probably being stripped of parts, even though 7725 is owned by CSX as it would turn out.
Behind the Conrail units are a GP60 and a former Conrail MT-6.
January 2004
NS 7030 sits near Chestnut Avenue without its highnose. This will be the third GP50 rebuilt into a GP38-3 become NS 5803.
Shop switcher 2220 arrives to pull 5011, a high nose GP38-2, out of the shop. Notice 5011 has a shop truck under the cab.
February 2004
NS 8311 awaits repairs after plunging nose first into the river next to the Conemaugh Line.
March 2004
Amtrak GP40PH 520 awaits rebuilding at Juniata. She will emerge as a GP38H-3.
At another angle, Q#1, a GP rebuild frame, and the long hood for a GP rebuild sit on the same track.
April 2004
Sandersville Railroad U25B slug #90 visits Juniata. The Conrail unit is an SW1200 and on 5/4/2004 was nothing but a frame and half a cab. Check out the photo below.
Today I got lucky. Testbed Q#1 just had a prime-mover installed for testing and is being moved to the test shed. This is the first time I've seen an engine in it.
May 2004
Here's an interesting unit. This is GENX 1013 before it was overhauled and armored. It is a former CR unit and went to Columbia
CR 9368 is nothing more than a frame and half a cab in this shot. Bye-bye.
July 2004
A future GP38-3 has received its new cab and nothing else.
A night scene at the E&M shop.
August 2004
This UP unit was damaged while on loan to NS. Notice the damage to the nose. A GP38-2 or GP38-3 sits next to the SD70M.
January 2005
The Q#1 testbed.
This is NS 8311, the C40-8 that was wrecked some time ago. Notice all the new metalwork. Check older photos for a "before" picture.
Among a handful of units to be scrapped recently was CR 2022, a B23-7. Not too much longer and all that will be left is the trucks, and the frame cut up in four or five pieces.
May 2005
As reported over the internet, Sandersville SW1500 1400 is at the shop. She's looking mighty clean, and check out the 5-chome horn.
Coaster F40PH-2C 2104 is next to the Sandersville switcher.
NS SW1500 2224 had her cab rebuilt. Apparently it was crushed somewhere.
This marks the first time I've caught a unit getting cut down for rebuild. Amtrak 525.
The guts have already been removed, and now the shop guys are cleaning out the cab.
January 2006
Surprise! NS 3821, the only SD40-2 to be converted to a 38-2, and the first RPU6 are at the shop for servicing.
August 2006
During the summer of 2006, Juniata tested and painted a group of 10 SD70ACe's under contract for Electro-Motive. Three can be seen here in the shop yard and they are ready to be picked up.
October 2006
JBS has finally started more GP50 rebuilds. Here 7029 I believe is torn apart, but still retains its trucks.
November 2006
Three of the four F units purchased for OCS service at the E&M shop.
RJC rebuilds 3801 and 3802 have been completed and are ready for pickup. They are GP38-2 rebuilds from GP38's. They're going to Central Kentucky Lines.
NS Q#1, the SD45 prime-mover testbed has been repainted and renumbered NS 1000.
From Sheetz, here's F9PH 1020 again.
MT-6 973 is seen along the road being prepared for rebuild. Its trucks have already been taken.
Here is a couple more NJT F40PH's.
Look at this beauty! Retired by Conrail sometime between 1997 and 1999, #7725 was conveyed to CSX in 1999 but never left Altoona. The Conrail Historical Society was looking to preserve this classic Conrail road-switcher, but CSX says they have plans for it.
This NW SD40 is also stored here. It could possibly be rebuilt into an RPU6 slug.
Another SD50.
December 2006
Future GP38-3 ex-7027 sits outside the E&M shop. She's in the process of being built up from a frame. The green and black piece of equipment on the rear of the unit is the APU.
Juniata installs new cabs on all current rebuilds; these are not technically chop-noses.
Here's the NS 2830 stripped to a frame. The next step is to start reinstalling everything back onto the frame.
All of these GP38s are stored [hopefully] pending conversion to GP38-2.
For the second time in three years, I catch Q#1/1000 with a prime-mover in it. This time it's a different type.
Here's a closer look at NS 1000 with a prime-mover in it with the sun almost set.
This is where many of the GP38s are being stored before they enter the shop for rebuild. Notice the SD38 on the left and the RJ Corman GP38 next to it. The RJ Corman unit is here for rebuild too.
